Fish & Chip Reviews

The Blue Posts, London, W1B 5PX, 28 September 2014

Hello! I cannot believe I have not had a fish and chips for 5 weeks.  This is a scandal, I am nearly disqualified as a critic.  However, this is just a once off mistake.  I issued myself  a warning.  I am letting myself off.

Sunday night, just after 9pm.  We wandered in 4 pubs in the area (near Carnaby Street), 3 x pubs open but closed kitchen, 1 x pub closed.  What is wrong with you London, your tube will run 24 hours,  be prepared!!!  The Blue Posts, you are a life saver!!!!  Soooooo hungry.

Finally, cold Amstel. Cheers!!!! I must say though with the boring old pint glass, it is not as taste good.
Finally, cold Amstel. Cheers!!!! I must say  without the funky Amstel glass, taste definitely 30% down.

Presentation is a key, even for a pint.  However, this is a old school type (AKA traditional) pub with old pint glasses.

What a lovely warm evening, window wide open, I am not cold.

Yes, it is old style, but dining table is shining, well wiped, nobody in dining room, carpet looks well hoovered.  Hygiene standard must be high!

Fish & Chips £10.25. Hand-battered cod, minted mushy peas, chunky tartar sauce, Aspall vineger

£10.25, on this location, like it!  Though I would be surprised if you charge more than £11 in here, hard to explain but this is the sort of old school pub which sets the boundary to gastro funky pretentious arse pubs.

Ordered, arrived in literary 4 minutes. Quick!

1. Fish 5/10.  MMM…. very very very dry.  Fish itself has a great flavour.  Why? Could not be cooked too long as it was served so quickly.  Also the batter is not the batter we know more like just a thin flour coat.  I must study harder, sorry folks cannot give better explanation to this.
2. Chips 4/10.  Absolutely average, obviously frozen.  This is the sort of chips every pub used to serve us before pubs started to enhance on foods over decade ago.  An another proof of old school pub.
3. Peas 4/10.  No mint flavour what so ever.

Surface is completely dry and slight crack. Can you see? This tells us it was portioned ages ago then stored under food warmer.

Ahhhhhhh!!!!! Just after we finished,  we spotted 2 mice running around the room.  Yes clean looking carpet, it was only us as customers.  They took chance and absolutely having a ball.  They look better than ones we see in Tube……looks lighter grey, shiny body, rounder……likely due to better nourishment considering where they live…….pub dining room. I asked the barman, he knows them as residents….yes old London building, what can we do…. My judgement for hygiene standard was questioned.

Overall score 1/10.  Sorry folks, some minus point including mice, cracked surfaced pea, average chips and dry fish.  But believe me, you gained point by being open late (ah, 9pm).

Good night!
