Fish & Chip Reviews

MULBERRY BUSH, London SE1 9PP, 27 June 2014

Hello Friday!  Time to wash out all the crap with chilled cheeky pints at Mulberry Bush, London SE1.  Sun is out, people are out,  pub’s windows + doors are wide open, I can feel Happy Friday vibe everywhere.

Chilled, buzzing good old Fosters. Well executed, 10/10.

Fish & chips, gongs beer battered haddock, triple cooked chips & mushy peas £11.00
Fish & chips, Youngs beer battered haddock, triple cooked chips & mushy peas £11.00

Nice one! Simple language (except triple cooked chips, what is this meaning?  Fried 3 times?), and classic HADDOCK, not HAKE. £11 is OK price for the location, Mulberry Bush, Southbank, a minute from Thames.

Ah, I have a bad feeling, served in fish shaped dish... this is not serious cooking.

Definitely has a good haddock look, which is an extra point.

1. Fish. 5/10.  Haddock was juicy and not overcooked.  However, a big however, batter was kind of “wet”.  Felt greasy.  Points are all dedicated to the quality of haddock.  What a shame!!

2. Chips. 4/10.  What is “triple cooked” all about?  Felt slightly raw and lukewarm in the middle.  I know this texture. yes, undercooked frozen oven chips.

3. Pea. 3/10  Yes it was mashy pea but straight from the tin.

As soon as I saw fish shaped dish, I knew it.  Overall 4/10.  I won’t be back I am afraid.  Also, there were at least 5 dining tables empty all night but all booked (I confirmed booked sign with names on them).  And staff did not seem bothered.  Strange!!

My journey of fish and chips critic continues.  Good night!!
