Fish & Chip Reviews

Doggett’s Coat and Badge, London, Blackfriars Bridge, SE1 9UD, 15 November 2024

Good evening! Here we are at Doggett’s Coat and Badge, one of a reliable chain of Nicholson’s – checking the menu, tried hard (and failed) to hide our shock seeing prices! Nicholsons Fish & Chips, Haddock hand-battered in Nicholson’s Pale Ale, with chunky chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce £19.50. Worth mentioning, this is for a “small portion” – with our previous experience small is small – need to go large for a normal portion – and this would cost us £21.00. Looking back my last visit here on Nov 23 – go large at £20. Ohhh 5% hike in 1 year, and 20% hike if we compare since since Feb 23 … back then it was £17.50. Confusing!

Well, small did not look too small, 1 x fairly decent size fish was served on “small” and 3 x small pieces were served on “large”. Confusing!

Fish 4/10 – MMM….. disappointed – all very very dry. Probably fish pieces are too long but too skinny, to get desirable crunchy effect on batter, needed to cook certain minutes – but this unfortunately cost texture on fish – loss of juiciness.

Chips 4/10 – also dry, and not much of it, completely mediocre

Mushy pea 1/10 – Not even worth mentioning – portion too small it went in 2 bites

Overall, disappointing after spending £21, but is this what we have to be happy with these days? Follow me, I am on the new mission to find out!!
