Fish & Chip Reviews

Doggett’s Coat and Badge, Blackfrairs Bridge, London, SE1 9UD, 28 February 2025

Hello it’s me again! I feel a bit of heat from the Guest review – stealing my show?! Well, no big deal, I am also having fish and chips – at Doggett’s and Coat and Badge – we are becoming regular here.

Nicholsons Fish & Chips Haddock hand-battered in Nicolson’s Pale Ale, with chunky chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce £19.50

It was not clear on the menu if this is large or small portion – my peer complained we wanted to order small portion – later we were refunded £1.65 each – this means small portion (without the extra piece on top) is £17.85. We only knew “small” exist from previous experience.

Fish: 6.5/10 Definitely pass the expected standard of batter – not too thick! but shame all of them were not piping hot – I suspect dishes were left a bit too long before serving – well the dining area was busy and probably not enough staff. Also fish was a bit dry – ever so slightly over cooked for my liking.

Chips 5/10 : This is what happen with chips if not hot – diminish the joy massively

Mushy peas: 7/10 Nothing special but definitely passed the standard, high mark as at least good portion, shouting “we are part of the element!” (unlike my recent experience).

However, overall not memorable unfortunately. I need “elevated standard” of fish and chips with my cerca £20. I will continue searching. Good night!
