Bull and Gate Kentish Town

A happy valentines day – even though this post is nothing to do with it. Cold February night, we are here at Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, former (glorious) music venue – turned into a chain (Young’s) restaurant pub. Opted for a set menu but due to a shortage of one of the ingredient, I swapped for Fish & Chips, cyder battered haddock, marrowfat mushy peas, tartar & curry sauce, triple cooked chips £19.

Great first impression!

Since the recent positive experience, I am not suspicious about the size of the fish!

Special attention to the appearance of mushy pea

Fish : 3/4 Super disappointed. The length of fish was not inflated but thickness of the fish was hugely inflated by the far too thick batter – furthermore sooooo salty. Sea salt was over added on the surface. I don’t hardly ever remove batter but I had to – too thick and too salty, to pay the respect to the nice, juicy (actually cooked well through, not too dry) fish flesh. Of which, I ate them all, without batter.

Chips : 6/10 Well executed, piping hot but far too thick for my liking.

Peas: 1/10 This was probably the worst mushy pea I ever had. Can you see the photo above? When served, my attention was immediately caught on this very very dry surface. It explained that this was portioned ages ago and was sitting under the warm heater/light. Worse, it was completely dried up inside as well as outside. Shocking.

Overall disappointed, especially in 2022, I gave a really good review of this place – but this does not mean I give up on Fish and Chips. Good night!
