Fish & Chip Reviews

THE SPREAD EAGLE, London NW1 7NB, 25 July 2014

Hello Friday, having fun at THE SPREAD EAGLE, Camden Town.  I don’t normally go out that often, this is summer special (why am I being so defensive?  Nobody will tell me off, I am a grown up.).

Yey, classic Fosters to crunch my thirst. Shame as I found too much air conditioning, I soon started feel COLD with this cold beer.

Nobody seem mind so much about air conditioning.  Mind you, I am always cold, I remember I used to have cold wars between my male colleagues for office temperature.  I used to have  a blanket on my lap, had own little electric heater under the desk while male colleagues were sweating and shouting.

Ale battered haddock triple cooked chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce £11.00. Reasonable price for newly refurbished (and poshed up at the same time) pub.

I must confess…. I was not going to have fish and chips tonight.  I just had one on Wednesday.  Had a good look through menu but nothing except fish and chips appeal to me.  Then I remember, this is (elimination) how I started eat fish and chips a lot.  Now I am a proud critic.

Very hot plate! Also notieably small plate which goes against trend but suits well for small pub tables.

Do you know, the average side of dinner plate has been increased by 36% since 1960’s.  In early 1990’2 alone, it went up by 20%.  The standard dinner plate became 10 inches (26cm) to 12 inches (32cm).   You now know why we all eat too much.  Fact!

However, in the special occasion (“Friday” of course) such as tonight we can eat too much haha!   Now, this is a old standard plate.  No objection, in fact it is neat, like it!  Portion size was not compromised either.

Fish and chips looks good. But ? pea does not look good, thought this is green mayonnaise.

1. Fish 9/10.  Excellent!  Succulent yet crunchy.  Nothing complicated (no added herbs, etc which is also nothing wrong with it but sometime simple is the best).  With fish skin of course.  Appreciate true fish and chips, fish and batter well integrated (see THE BOHEMIA post for further details regarding “integration”).

2. Chips 6/10.  Good chips but average, no wow factor.  Though I could say simple is the best?  Oh well, this is a subjective opinion after all.

3. Peas 1/10.  Very strange.  Waterly and slightly milky/whitish colour.  Diluted with milk? really? Also strange presentation, next to tartar sauce and in same serving pot.

Overall 7/10.  Well done.  Peas can be improved easily.

By the way, nicely refurbished, full of trendy young people after work.  But where are the old folks? I will be certainly be back.  Please turn the air conditioning off , then I would have another pint.
