The Stage Door

Hot Hot Hot!!!! But this does not mean we cannot have steaming hot fish and chips. Here we are at the Stage Door, near iconic Old Vic.

The Stage Door

Fish & Chips, lightly battered cod with chips and tartar sauce £15.50. Relatively OK price – on the website it sited £12.95 (as of 15/08/2026). I understand rapid price increase is not catching up with the speed of website update….

Photo No 1 – a view from directly above. Photo No 2 – a view from side. Photo No.3 – Me holding them suspiciously.

Fish : 5/10 : Batter was actually fine – really crunchy and not greasy – this was definitely done with clean and well temperatured oil. However as you can clearly see, the fish flesh was so thin hence “arched” side view. It’s so thin that they could not hold the shape in the high temperature. Furthermore, in my mouth, occasionally I got slight hint of the fish perhaps was not thawed in optimum way – waterly (this is different from juicy), ever so slight hint of “off”. Minimum flavour.

Chips 9/10 : Great chips, ever so slightly thin (but not too thin to be french fries) which is absolutely fine. Steaming hot, freshly cooked, but fluffy in side. Simple, with added salt, great portion. Well done!

No peas – pea is not a default, as I previously learnt.

Noted old fashion ‘dinner plate size’ – which is around 23cm across – but this did not stop giving us a lots of chips, thank you!

I also visited here 3 years ago – price then was £12.95 – 20% increase past 3 years – considering what has been happening in the world this may be acceptable (completely my subjective opinion).

Good night!
