Fish & Chip Reviews

The Albany, London W1W 5QU, 11 July 2014

¡hola amigos, hoy es viernes!  Of course, time for Fish and chips at The Albany, near Great Portland Street.  I am a creature of habit.

Too cold for lager today, of course, it is mid-summer. I opted for Latte.

After all, I am NOT a creature of habit, the plan is to have latte with fish and chips.  However, oh, however, the latte was luke warm…..I had to ask to heat up, also the taste (both milk and coffee) was too weak….  Oh, well, should have opted for lager.

Fish & Chips. Sustainably caught (Yes I got this!) hake in cider & tarragon batter, double cooked chips. £12

My heart sank…. HAKE.  Double cooked chips….I had triple cooked chips at Mulberry Bush.  That was disappointing.  If triple cooked chips was not good enough, how bad will they be with double cooked.  £12 is also slightly bullish side.

Good first impression, though the portion size slightly small for £12.

The shape of fish was not HAKE I imagined. Looked more like "proper".

1. Fish 7/10.  I am convinced this was NOT hake, it was definitely COD.  It was in fact lovely, moist, the taste of COD I know.  What a lovely surprise.  Though batter was slightly too thick.

2. Chips 9/10.  Wow, well executed DOUBLE cooked chips! Yey! really really tasty, every bite I tasted good deep potato flavour, definitely cooked from scratch.  Shame it was not enough of them.

3. Mashy peas 9/10.  This was not mentioned on the menu, I was not sure if I would get them though I would be really annoyed if they were not included!  May be it is right things to do, not to mention on the menu.  Everyone (me?) makes too much fuss of them.  Well, it was really tasty, slightly buttery but not greasy, full of pea flavours.  Would be great with slight hint of mint.

Overall 8/10, some minus points due to slightly small portion size for £12 and thick butter on the fish.  Though I surely will be back, I must try your lager The Albany!
